What is the Role of Ethics in Marketing?

What is the Role of Ethics in Marketing?

Ethics in marketing simply means doing the right thing when making marketing decisions or taking marketing actions. What is right is generally determined by what the marketer feels or understands as consistent with personal values, industry standards, and customer expectations.

Marketing ethically is important, as it is the basis for creating trust and confidence in a product or brand.

Historically, marketing has been plagued by largely unethical tactics. For example, traveling salespeople came into a town, duped folks into buying an inferior product, and left before the inferior nature of the product was realized.

This type of behavior has largely subsided based upon consumer protection laws, internet reviews of products, and the increased information and options available to consumers.
