All right. So some people don't have the
most positive view of marketing
and while I can respect that
I think it's outdated, why do I say that?
because I think the reason people
sometimes have a negative perception of
marketing is that
in the past there was a time when a lot
of salespeople did
unethical things to make sales and that
would include lying or
cheating people out of product or you
know all sorts of different
things but that was way back in the past
as far as I'm concerned.
I think successful marketing today
really relies on ethical behavior,
so why are ethics important to marketing?
for one thing marketing has two
sides to it, one is micro marketing and
and that's just what
businesses do to sell products that's
what we think of when we hear marketing.
But marketing also can be thought of in
terms of macro marketing
which is to say a system for allocating
and that makes it really important that
we use ethics in deciding
how resources should be allocated.
We also need to be ethical in micro
but the impact is larger of macro
these are both areas where ethics come
Next in today's world we have pretty
rules around product liability and
in other words if as an organization we
sell a product that
hurts people or doesn't do what it's
supposed to do
then we're gonna be held accountable
in today's world where it's not easy to
disappear into the next town over after
you make a sale.
That leads me to the next point or the
last point here which is
news travels fast information moves
at the speed of light these days way
more so than ever before
so whereas back in the day somebody
could make a sale
and as I just said move on to the next
town and nobody would know what had
well in today's world before they could
get to the next town
word would be out all over social media
and they wouldn't be able to make that
So from both a principal standpoint and
a pragmatic standpoint
ethics are really important to marketing
because without them
you're not going to be successful and
you're going to people are going to know
and it's going to have a negative impact
on society so none of those things are
that's why ethics are important to
