Purchaser is a role carried out in the new product development process. Purchasing specialists are usually a key liaison between the supplier and the buyer. The purchaser plays the following roles in product development:
- Coordinating role: The project purchaser works as link between the product development team and different purchasing specialists or suppliers of the resources necessary for production.
- Developing product specification: The project purchaser will be involved in specifying materials, components, assemblies, etc., to suppliers.
- Operation role: The project purchase will aid in planning supplier development activities (production or equipment or materials) to meet the demands of product production. This is known as “preparation responsibility”.
- Structure role: The project purchaser manages relationships with a base of preferred development suppliers.
- Policy role: The project purchase takes part in the formulation and communication of guidelines and policies regarding the role and tasks of the different departments and suppliers in product development, and the determination of develop-or-buy strategies.
