What is Vroom and Yetton’s Normative Decision Model?
The normative decision model was developed by Professors Victor Vroom, Philip Yetton, and Arthur Jago to assist leaders in determining the extent to which they should involve subordinates in the decision-making process based upon the nature of the situation and the subordinates.
The model directs leaders through a serious of questions concerning specific factors relevant to the decision-making process. The answer will assess the leader as either high or low for the relevant factor. The factors are as follows:
- Decision significance – To what extent will the question have an impact on a specific situation, individual, or organization?
- Importance of Commitment – Does the leader require committeemen from subordinates to effectuate the decision?
- Leader Expertise – Does the leader possess all the requisite information to make a decision?
- Likelihood of Commitment – How willing are the employees to accept the decision without involvement?
- Goal Alignment – Are employee goals aligned well with the organizational goals?
- Group Expertise – Does the group of subordinates have expertise in this situation or subject matter?
- Team Competence – Does the group of subordinates have the ability to solve the problem or address the situation?The model provides a score to the leader demonstrating which styles are most appropriate to be effective in a given situation.
