What is a Values Statement?
In addition to the mission and vision statements, companies will frequently create a values statement. This statement seeks to reinforce the core operating values of the company. Values statements are generally used when the company has a list of identifiable values that are more appropriately identified and explained outside of the mission or vision statement.
The values statement derives from the organizations culture. It allows members to establish priorities in their action and establishes a purpose in the companys collective efforts.
Companies use any number of methods to develop a value statement. Often the values of the company are organic – resulting directly from the existing employee environment. Other times, the company develops values in an attempt to guide existing employees.
The companies values may come directly from the leadership. Other, it may derive from what the company believes is its strength.
